Senegalese Arts Groups

Here are some examples of urban arts activism in Dakar’s dynamic and ever-creative youth art scene:

  • Cré’Art Multi-media Association.  In the low-income banlieue Pikine,  a group of young people have organized themselves to make videos and to train as producers, directors, writers, camerapeople, technicians and actors.  Without the means to buy equipment, they often build their own.
  • Vendredi Slam.  One Friday a month, poets, musicians and graffiti artists perform for a huge audience.
  • Kaddu Gunz.  One of the  many crews in Dakar’s huge and socially conscious rap scene, Kaddu Gunz (a combination of the Wolof word for “speech” and the English word “guns” and roughly translated as “speech as a weapon”) raps in French, English and Wolof.
