First mural series: The HLM Neighborhood

In 1999, a tiny handful of young Senegalese hip-hoppers discovered graffiti art as a way to clean up and beautify the disintegrating spaces of their beloved Dakar.   Since then, the reputation of Dakar’s unique street art scene has come to equal that of New York or Paris for its creative originality and social activism.  This April, Dakar’s annual Festigraff will host major street artists from Africa, the Americas, Europe and Asia.  They will join the local Dakar artists in cleaning up and covering with murals one of the city’s dilapidated neighborhoods.

Here is the first series of murals in the HLM neighborhood of Dakar.
